Abstract

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether children with MIH and parents perceive MIH as a health problem and to investigate the physical and psychological effects of MIH on patients and their parents.
Methods: This study is an questionnaire research which is conducted with children with MIH. After the informed consent form was obtained from individuals and families, the questionnaire was applied and provided to answered completely that the attitude towards MIH and to determine whether MIH was perceived as an oral health problem. Since the children were not qualified to make their own decisions, their parents' views on this issue and their differences were analyzed statistically with Spearman correlation, Mann Whitney U, Chi square and Fisher exact test.
Results: When the results of the questionaires of the children and parents were compared, it was seen that MIH was perceived as an oral health problem among the parents and children. The mean parent score was 22.63, child score was 20.85 (p= 0.026; p<0.05). It was determined that this difference of perception occurs only when the disease is at a high level. The reasons underlying the difference in perception between children and parents were determined as physical factors (r=0.446; p<0.05). The mean psychological score was 11.77 in parents and 10.78 in children.
Conclusion: Parents of children with MIH feel more sad and anxious about the appearance of teeth than their children. Correspondingly the parents think that they need treatment more than their children.
