Abstract

Objective: To determine the potential of the anatomical location of unilaterally impacted maxillary canine on panoramic radiographs that cause resorption of the adjacent lateral root.

Material-Method: This study was carried out on the panoramic radiographs of 47 patients, with a unilateral maxillary impacted canine tooth with a mean age of 23.81±6.59 years. In the CBCT recordings, the resorption of the lateral tooth, adjacent to the impacted maxillary canine was determined. The study material was divided into two groups as resorbed and healthy lateral tooth. On panoramic radiographs, the anatomical position of the impacted maxillary canine of a total of 47 individuals, was evaluated using the methods; sector determination, vertical position of the canine crown, angle of the impacted maxillary canine to the occlusal plane, canine follicle width measurement.

Results: Compared to the group with healthy adjacent laterals, the occlusal plane angle of the impacted canine of the individuals with resorbed lateral tooth was higher (p<0.001) and the follicle width was lower (p=0.008). In the individual with resorbed lateral tooth, the angle of the impacted canine tooth to occlusal plane (p=0.001) revealed a significant difference. In the group of patients with resorbed lateral tooth, a significant positive correlation was observed for age and occlusal angle (r=0.449; p=0.028); A significant negative correlation was observed with follicle width (r=0.529; p=0.008).

Conclusion: With panoramic radiographs, impacted maxillary canine and its potential for resorption of adjacent lateral tooth can be determined by measuring the occlusal plane angle and follicle width of the impacted canine.
