Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate VO2 max which is known as an important criteria of the aerobic performance by field and laboratory tests. Thirty athletes (15 female and 15 male) who have a current athletes license were recruited for this study. All of the athletes performed treadmill test (TT) which is known as the golden standard in evaluating VO2 max, a 20- m shuttle run test (SRT), and 12 minute Cooper test (CT), respectively. The VO2 max determined by a telemetrical portable ergospirometer in TT and SRT, on the other hand it was determined by a nomogram in CT. Also, blood lactate was taken before, right after, and 3 minutes after the tests. Paired sample t test and Pearson correlation coefficients test showed no statistical difference in VO2 max mean values of the TT, SRT and CT tests (p>0.05), but there was perfect positive correlation. Also, there were statistical differences on the blood lactate values taken right after the tests (p>0.05). This was valid for the blood lactate values which were taken in the 3rd minute after the tests of the men (p<0.05). With regards to women, statistical differences were found in blood lactate between TT - SRT, and also TT - CT tests (p<0.05), but no statistical difference was found between SRT- CT tests (p>0.05). Field tests which require low cost and do not need advanced equipment may be an alternative to laboratory tests which are costly and which require sophisticated equipment. However, it should be taken into consideration that laboratory tests are more preferable to validity and reliability of the field tests than the others.
