Aim: The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of the attitudes and behaviors of their parents and other family elders on the nutritional behaviors of preschool children. Method: The research was carried out on 271 parents who worked at Başkent University Campus between April 2022 and June 2022, spent time with grandparents, and had healthy children in the pre-school period. Parents' age, education, working and income status, family types, how often they spend time with grandparents, eating habits with parents and grandparents were recorded in the questionnaire, and the Body Mass Index (BMI) values of the children were calculated. By applying the Family Nutrition Physical Activity (ABFA) scale, the effect of family behavior on children's nutrition and physical activity status was examined. Results: The mean age of the parents was 34.2±5.20 years, and 55.4% of the families were extended families and 44.6% were nucleus families. According to the BMI classification of the children, 13% of the girls were underweight, 5.8% were overweight and 14.5% were obese; 13.5% of the men were underweight, 3% were overweight, and 8.3% were obese. The distribution of BMI classification of children according to family type was found to be higher in terms of both underweight (14% and 12.4%, respectively) and obesity (13.3% and 9.1%, respectively) of children in extended families, but statistically significant difference was not found (p>0.05). It was determined that the frequency of obesity was in the children of parents with the highest in high school education and the frequency of underweight was in the children of parents with the highest primary education (p<0.05). It was determined that 72.7% of family elders in the extended family interfere with child nutrition, with a moderate effect level of 50.4%. Moreover, children in an extended family environment tend to choose food more frequently than those living in a nuclear family environment. The mean ABFA score was found to be lower in the nuclear type compared to the extended family type (p>0.05). Conclusion: In addition to the influence of parents in the formation of healthy eating habits in childhood, the influence of grandparents in the extended family is also of great importance.
