Effect of Boron-Aluminide Coating Applied on R4 Grade Offshore Mooring Chain Steel on Pitting and Tribo-Corrosion Behaviour

Abstract

Offshore mooring systems are susceptible to wear, corrosion, and fatigue damage, making improving their tribocorrosion resistance essential. This study aims to evaluate the effects of boron-aluminizing treatment on the corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of R4 steel in a marine environment. The boron-aluminide coating was characterized by SEM, EDS, and XRD, revealing the presence of FeAl as the dominant phase with minor amounts of FeB, Fe2B, and Fe2Al5 phases. Results showed that the boron-aluminide coating improved the corrosion resistance of R4 steel, acting as a barrier between the coating and the steel substrate and maintaining its corrosion resistance even under wear conditions. The findings suggest that the boron-aluminide coating can potentially improve the corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance of R4 steel in marine environments, making it a cost-effective alternative to passive materials for the thermochemical coating of low-alloy steels.

R4 Kalite Açık Deniz Demirleme Zinciri Çeliğine Uygulanan Bor-Alüminid Kaplamanın Çukurlaşma ve Tribo-Korozyon Davranışına Etkisi

Abstract

Açık deniz demirleme sistemleri aşınmaya, korozyona ve yorulma hasarına karşı hassastır ve bu da tribokorozyon direncini geliştirmeyi gerekli kılar. Bu çalışma, boro-aluminyumlama işleminin deniz ortamında R4 çeliğinin korozyon ve tribokorozyon direnci üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Boro-alüminid kaplama, az miktarda FeB, Fe2B ve Fe2Al5 fazı ile baskın faz olarak FeAl varlığını ortaya koyan SEM, EDS ve XRD ile karakterize edildi. Sonuçlar, boron-alüminid kaplamanın R4 çeliğinin korozyon direncini iyileştirdiğini, kaplama ile çelik substrat arasında bir bariyer görevi gördüğünü ve aşınma koşullarında bile korozyon direncini koruduğunu gösterdi. Bulgular, boron-alüminid kaplamanın deniz ortamlarında R4 çeliğinin korozyon ve tribokorozyon direncini potansiyel olarak iyileştirebileceğini ve düşük alaşımlı çeliklerin termokimyasal kaplaması için pasif malzemelere göre uygun maliyetli bir alternatif haline getirebileceğini göstermektedir.
