A Description on Cognitive, Affective and Behavioral Dimensions of Attitudes of University Students towards Disasters

Year 2017, Volume: 6 Issue: 1, 114 - 127, 25.02.2017

Abstract

In Turkey, an adequate level of awareness has not yet been achieved about consciousness and
attitude towards disasters, and especially earthquakes which require attention because of their
economic and social consequences. This study aims to explore Afyon Kocatepe University
students’ attitudes towards disasters by incorporating cognitive, affective and behavioral
dimensions of attitude. The study further investigates the relationship between dimensions and
individual characteristics of participants. In this quantitative research, descriptive statistics, as
well as T-Test, Variance Analysis and Explanatory Factor Analysis of the scale developed for
the purposes of this research will be presented. The internal consistency of the scale is reported
by high Cronbach’s Alpha values. The results reveal that participants have an inadequate
knowledge level about disasters, high level of fear and anxiety, and inadequate ideal behaviors.
In addition, some individual characteristics are found to impact on the dimensions of attitude.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Bilişsel, Duyuşsal ve Davranışsal Boyutta Afetlere Yönelik Tutumlarına İlişkin Bir Betimleme

Year 2017, Volume: 6 Issue: 1, 114 - 127, 25.02.2017
