Year 2024, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 123 - 133, 03.05.2024

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between children's screen addiction and eating behavior. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with the parents of students studying in two public kindergartens located in the center of a town in Turkey, in the spring term of the 2022-2023 academic year. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interview technique using the “Personal Information Form”, “the Problematic Media Use Measure-Short Form (PMUM-SF)” and “the Children’s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ)”. It was determined that 62.7% of the children use smart phones/mobile phones as visual media tools. A positive, statistically significant correlation was found between children’s the PMUM-SF mean score and the CEBQ’s Emotional Overeating sub-dimension mean score and the CEBQ’s Desire to Drink sub-dimension mean score (p<0.05). A positive, statistically significant correlation was determined between children’s the duration of daily use of visual media tools and the mean score of the PMUM-SF (p<0.001). In this study, it was concluded that as the children's screen addiction score increased, the desire to drink and emotional overeating scores also increased. In addition, it was found that as the children's daily usage duration of visual media tools increases, the screen addiction score also increases.
