Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the morphometric features of some anatomical structures in the maxillofacial region in patients planning orthognathic surgery and to compare these features according to different jaw relations in the sagittal direction, gender and age.
Materials-Methods: 235 adult patients between the ages of 18-50 who received cone beam computed tomography for planning orthognathic surgery were included in the study. Posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) diameter was measured in coronal section on cone beam computed tomography images. The width of the incisive foramen (IF) was measured as millimeter in the sagittal plane. The diameter of the mental foramen (MF) was determined by measuring the distance between the lower and upper borders of the foramen on cross-sectional sections.
Results: The relationship between the mean diameter of PSAA and gender was found to be statistically significant in both right and left jaws (p<0.0001). PSAA diameter was found to be significantly larger in men than in women. A statistically significant difference between the diameter value of the left maxilla and age was determined, and a positive correlation was found between these two parameters (p = 0.03). There was no statistically significant relationship between PSAA diameter and malocclusion type (p>0.05). The average IF diameter was determined to be 3.2±0.85 mm in Class 1 individuals, 3.1±0.69 mm in Class 2 individuals, and 3.1±0.79 mm in Class 3 individuals. There was no statistically significant relationship between IF diameter and malocclusion type (p>0.05). MF diameter was found to be statistically significantly larger in men than in women (p<0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference between age, malocclusion and MF diameter (p>0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that the type of malocclusion did not affect the morphometric measurements of the posterior superior alveolar artery, incisive foramen and mental foramen in patients planning orthognathic surgery.
