Abstract

Evaluation of Microbiota Awareness and Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Adults with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Year 2024, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 7 - 16, 15.01.2024

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate microbiota awareness and adherence to the Mediterranean diet in individuals diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and healthy individuals. A total of 304 volunteer participants, including 148 individuals diagnosed with IBD and 156 healthy individuals between the ages of 18-65 years, constituted the sample of the study. Data were collected using an online questionnaire including general characteristics, health information and dietary habits, Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS) and Microbiota Awareness Scale (MAS). As a result of the study, microbiota awareness scores and Mediterranean diet adherence scores of individuals with IBD were found to be significantly lower than healthy individuals. It was observed that the MAS score was positively correlated with MEDAS score and negatively correlated with age and BMI. Planning trainings on microbiota and Mediterranean diet for individuals with IBD may contribute to increasing awareness of these issues. Increased knowledge about microbiota and Mediterranean diet is thought to positively affect disease prognosis and improvement of nutritional status.
